British-German Dialogue on Defence and Security Policies 2016

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung London and the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) hosted the annual British-German dialogue on security and defence policies.

The event brought together leading politicians of the Bundestag and the British Parliament as well as security specialists to discuss cooperation on these topics in Europe.

The changes in the European security architecture as a result of the Brexit vote were in the centre of the of the debates. British MPs made it clear that Britain has a strong interest in continuing its cooperation with its European neighbours, in particular with Germany. The UK’s Strategic Defence and Security Review and Germany’s White Paper were basis for a more general debate on the role of the EU within NATO and the role of military in the fight against terrorism. The meeting focused as well on current European security cooperation, namely the actual missions in the Mediterranean. Experts and politicians both agreed that the ongoing conflicts around Europe will push defence and security up on the political agenda in the years to come.
